Instructions for PH14 Professional Teaching Practicum
Updated 10/9/04
Each student is required to do a Professional Teaching Practicum (PTP) as part of his Ph.D. program at BBS. The purpose of this exercise is to get independent feedback on research and teaching skills in a bona fide educational environment.
General Instructions
1. Setting up the PTP is the student’s responsibility. BBC&S will assist as possible but has no obligation to provide teaching experiences at the college or graduate level for Ph.D. students.
2. The PTP must be taught at the post-high school level. Allowances are made for legitimate Bible Institute experiences, especially cross-cultural environments where the educational level of students may vary dramatically.
3. Each proposed teaching experience must be approved by the Director of Ph.D. Studies before the student undertakes the teaching opportunity. The Ph.D. student must send a request form with the proposal for his teaching experience to the Director of Ph.D. Studies. This form can be downloaded using the link below.
4. Each course must be the equivalent of a two-hour credit course in terms of actual teaching time (around the 30 hour mark).
5. The PTP should normally be completed before the dissertation phase of the student’s program.
Specific Instructions
The student must send the following items to the Director of Ph.D. Studies for evaluation:
1. The notes that the student used in teaching the course – This would include any visual materials such as overheads, PowerPoint slides, etc.
2. A video of one actual teaching segment (one or two hours) – If video is not possible (due to the circumstances of the class), an audio recording of the teaching segment must be supplied.
3. Course evaluation forms from each student in the class.
4. Course evaluation form from at least one administrator or educator at the teaching site.
5. A one-page general statement from the student outlining the experience of the course including a brief self-evaluation and outline of the experience.
Any deviation from these instructions must be approved by the Director of Ph.D. Studies.
