What Do I Bring?
Bring any assignment sheets, notes, drafts, outlines, or sources you have regarding your assignment, question, or concern. However, you need not have a completed paper. Consultants will help you with understanding the assignment, generating ideas, and so forth. You may not just drop off a paper for editing. Consultants at the Center are available to assist in your development as a writer and will work with you to improve your papers.
Can You Help With Non-Literature Papers?
Yes. Although we may not have a consultant who shares your major, we are all versed in the writing requirements for different disciplines. What we don’t know, we will look up!
What Can I Expect?
When you arrive, be prepared by bringing your assignment, class notes, and any draft you may have. Be ready to talk! You and your consultant will engage in conversation about your topic. Often, we ask students to read their papers or portions of them aloud. This strategy can aid in pinpointing major issues or problem areas within the paper. Conferences will run between 15—30 minutes and if time allows, may go up to 50 minutes.
Who Should Use The Center?
Students who wish to improve their writing skills. The consultants are prepared to work with you during any phase of the writing process, whether it be brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, documenting sources, or avoiding plagiarism.
Students who desire to do well in their academic careers. To do well in college and in your chosen career, you must write well. At the Writing Center consultants instruct students on the rhetorical strategies used by successful writers. By providing a collaborative atmosphere that encourages students to think critically and independently, the Writing Center staff helps college students of any level and from any discipline to become better writers.
When Is The Best Time To Visit The Center?
The sooner the better. Early in the writing process you can brainstorm ideas, consider audience and purpose, or work on a viable thesis. Later in the process, when you have a rough draft, the consultants can focus on higher level concerns like focus, organization, or development of ideas. Still later, you might stop by to discuss or work with a consultant on improving your proofreading and editing skills.
Too many students wait until the day before a paper is due to visit the center, which does not allow adequate time for anything other than superficial revisions . The process of consultation is best when used early and often. To improve your writing skills, do what successful writers do. Seek out readers’ feedback and put the ideas to use.
